Lights, Virtual camera, Action! (2017)
There is no doubt that recent technology from game engines will influence the production of 3D animations. Any 3D short form animation production would have to consider using a game engine approach. The acquisition of new skillsets will prevent an immediate cross-over, but as industry creatives cross boundaries, and new graduates leave art & design schools with both skillsets, it is likely we will see increased numbers of 3D animation/game engine hybrid productions

Lock up your stories – here comes Virtual Reality (2016)
We have seen several very professional attempts to create VR animated stories with varying degrees of success. It is clearly evident that the rules of cinematography, staging and editing all change. Furthermore, if animation is seen as a linear narrative, a controlled communication from story-teller to listener, what is gained by giving the listener more freedom? In the same way that early 3D computer animation placed pressure on the aesthetics of traditional animation, VR will exert a pressure on the design and structure of animation.

Virtual Reality will Break Your Narrative (2016)
What happens when 3D stereo virtual reality is used to experience animation? Consider that virtual reality (VR) places the viewer insider the animation, with a perpetual view of the action, changing all notions of shot control, editing and timing – essential tools used to control a narrative experience. Cinematography is replaced with environmental design, and camera shots become viewer control. Does this mean that a VR animation is essentially a computer game with a story? When does a linear narrative become an interactive game narrative, and how does this affect the viewer experience and communication?

A New Medium for Animation – Stereo Virtual Reality (2015)
This paper demonstrates how the medium of animation can be dramatically enhanced when stereo virtual reality is employed. The animation discussed in this paper combines the cinematic aesthetic of film, the interactivity of video gaming and the immersion of virtual reality to create a compelling and unique visual experience.

Teaching Design Thinking. Proceedings of World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications 2013. Chesapeake, VA: AACE. http://www.editlib.org/pv/112161  (2013)
As awareness of the designed experience increases, so does the desire to apply the process of design thinking to a wider range of scenarios. This paper demonstrates how one university design school is merging design thinking strategies with well established visual research techniques to develop a process that combines the best of both approaches.
